Rules & Regulations
 
 
I. Generalities:
The aim of this Competition is to promote worldwide exchange and development of Ballet education and training.
This Competition is hosted by the Beijing Dance Academy (BDA). All activities will be organized and supervised by the Organizing Committee of the Beijing International Ballet Invitational for Dance Schools under the Beijing Dance Academy. The Organizing Committee comprises the Jury and several working panels.
The Jury, consisting of internationally recognized ballet experts who are invited by the Organizing Committee, is in charge of the selection and evaluation system. Decisions made by the Jury will be final.
Venue of Competition: Beijing, China
Time of Competition: October 11th – 25th, 2014
 
II. Qualifications and Categories
1. The Competition is open to all ballet students, including those who, a) have graduated; b) or have been professionals in bal­let companies less than three years after the graduation (certificate of graduation or letter of recommendation by instructor will be needed as proof).
2. Contestants are divided into three categories.
Category A:
Students born after Oct 11th , 1992 and have been professionals in ballet companies less than three years after the graduation (cer­tificate of graduation or letter of recommendation by instructor will be needed as proof).
Category B:
Students born between Oct 11th, 1995 and Oct 10th, 1998
Category C:
Students born between Oct 11th, 1998 and Oct 10th, 2000
Note: Students can only choose to compete in one category. Contestants can choose to compete in one more advanced category but no longer in the lower category simultaneously. Once confirmed the qualification, it will be unchangeable.
 
III. Competition Procedures
Category A & B :
Contestants can choose either Pas de Deux or Solo. Contestants can not change their choices after confirmation. If a contestant chooses Pas de Deux, he/she should perform Pas de Deux in every round, the same for the solo contestants. Male & female contest­ants in Pas de Deux will be scored respectively.
Round 1:
Pas de Deux: One grand Pas de Deux chosen from listed classical repertoire.
Solo: Two variations from listed classical repertoire.
Round 2:
One contemporary piece (max 6 minutes for Pas de Deux, 4 minutes for Solo) choreographed after Jun 22nd , 2012
Round 3:
Pas de Deux: One grand Pas de Deux from the listed classical repertoire.
Solo: Two variations from the listed classical repertoire.
Please Note: repertoire in Round 3 should not be the same as those performed in Round 1.
 
Category C:(solo only)
Round 1:
One classical class and one contemporary class are separately given by teachers designated by the Organizing Committee.
Round 2:
[a] One variation from the listed classical repertoire.
[b] One contemporary solo (max 4 minutes) choreographed after Jun 22nd , 2012
Round 3:
One variation from the listed classical repertoire, which should not be the same as the one performed in Round 2.
 
Note: Every candidate should choose their classical Pas de Deux or Solo from the attached classical ballet repertoire list providedby the Committee.
 
IV. Prizes
1. “Prix de BDA”, equivalent to the full scholarship of USD 10,000 (Ten Thousand US Dollars) for studying in BDA for one academic
year. In case the contestant gives up the opportunity to study in BDA, he/she won’t be awarded.
2. Category A:
First Prize one female & one male USD 5,000 (Five Thousand US Dollars) each
Second Prize one female & one male USD 4,000 (Four Thousand US Dollars) each
Third Prize one female & one male USD 3,000 (Three Thousand US Dollars) each
Category B:
First Prize one female & one male USD 4,000 (Four Thousand US Dollars) each
Second Prize one female & one male USD 3,000 (Three Thousand US Dollars) each
Third Prize one female & one male USD 2,000 (Two Thousand US Dollars) each
Category C:
First Prize one female & one male USD 3,000 (Three Thousand US Dollars) each
Second Prize one female & one male USD 2,000 (Two Thousand US Dollars) each
Third Prize one female & one male USD 1,000 (One Thousand US Dollars) each
3. “Hua Xia Prize” of USD3,000 (Three Thousand US Dollars) is specially for a contestant as the scholarship for studying at the
Beijing Dance Academy. In case the contestant gives up the opportunity to study in BDA, he/she won’t be awarded.
4. “Jury Special Prize” of USD1,000 (One Thousand US Dollars) is specially for 1 contestant with future potential.
5. “Contemporary Choreography Prize” of USD1,000 (One Thousand US Dollars) each are specially for 2 choreographers.
6. “Contemporary Performance Prize” of USD1,000 (One Thousand US Dollars) is specially for 1 contestant.
7. Other finalists will receive a certificate from the Organizing Committee.
8. The Jury has the right to grant or not grant the prizes and make decision of sharing the prizes.
9. The amount of prizes is before tax. The winner needs to pay the Individual Income Tax according to Chinese law.
 
V. Application Procedures
1. Application Dates: Feb. 1st —— Jul. 1st, 2014. The deadline for the submission of online application and postage of relative documents
is Jul. 1st, 2014.
2. Application procedure:
2.1 Download and fill in the application form, or apply online ( www.bdaballet.cn )
2.2 Send materials for application, which includes:
a. Recent classical ballet video, which should include at least two variations or one complete Pas de Deux (variation and Coda
included).
b. Completed application form with signature or exported application form with signature
c. Identification paper:
ID card copies of Chinese contestants and their instructors
Passport copies of overseas contestants and their instructors
Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents copies of contestants and their instructors from Hong Kong and Macau
Travel Passes for Taiwan Residents to Enter or Leave the Mainland copies of contestants and their instructors from Taiwan
d. Letter of Recommendation from contestant’s instructor, dancers from company need to provide the copies of their diplomas.
e. Medical Certificate from the school or hospital
f. Resume of Ballet-learning experience
g. One ID photo and two stage photos of each contestant and his/her instructor (shoot in 2014)
The above seven pieces of document should either be sent to the email address for application with attached files or be sent to the
organizing committee by post.
By email: Material a should be uploaded online and make sure the link is available. Please scan materials b, c, d and e and make them into jpg. or pdf form. Material f and g can send electronic version.

2.3 Confirmation. The organizing committee will inform you that your material has been successfully received by email or by phone.
3. Applicants who pass the video selection held by the Organizing Committee are qualified to participate in the competition and they will receive a letter of confirmation from the Committee before August 1st, 2014. Qualified applicants can also receive financial support, including international airfare and accommodations in Beijing during the Invitational. The Committee will also offer accommodation for one instructor of each contestant in Beijing during the Invitational. In case more than one applicant from one institution are confirmed of the qualification, the Committee will only offer accommodation for one instructor from the institution.
 
VI. Stage , Music and Clothing
1. The stage for competition is standard professional theater stage with plastic floor.
2. The contestants may use props that can be moved on their own. Dangerous articles, such as the liquid and tinder, are strictly prohibited.
3. Please prepare the music by yourself. The format can be CD or MD. (There must be one recording only per CD or MD). The name and nationality of the contestant as well as the name of the repertoire must be marked on the CD or MD, which shall be submitted to the Organizing Committee after drawing for each round. Please ensure the CD or MD can be played smoothly and it is safer to prepare at least two copies. Contestants must ensure they have the rights to publicly use and broadcast all the dance and music pieces in the competition.
4. Contestants shall prepare fitted practice clothes and performance costumes on their own.
 
VII. Travel Insurance
All contestants and instructors must have their own medical and accident insurance covering any accidents or damages during their stay in China.
 
VIII. Gala
All the contestants are obligated to follow the arrangement of the Organizing Committee to perform in Gala performance without
any payment.
 
IX. Rights of the Organizing Committee
The Committee has the right to arrange photography sessions, interviews, broadcasts, video and audio recordings and other activities for the contestants without extra payment. All types of visual and audio-visual recordings of the contestants’ performance and participation to the competition shall be the exclusive property of the Organizing Committee. No visual or audio-visual recording of the performance and participation to the competition may be made without the Committee’s written authorization. The contestants are aware and agree that such recordings may be used for commercial or promotional purposes. The organizing committee will provide you with Chinese and English language service.
 
X. The Organizing Committee also has the ultimate right of interpretation in respect of any regulations or provisions not mentioned above.
 
XI. The Invitational consists of events such as Chinese Dance Culture Exhibition, International Dance Demonstration Performance, Public Master Classes and Ballet Teaching Seminar. Registration, ticket booking, class selection and official information release forall the events will be through the official website of the Invitational. Please pay attention.
