Shanghai Theatre Academy is an art institution of higher learning in China that cultivates professional talents for performing arts, and it is a comprehensive art college offering drama, traditional Chinese opera, dance, film and television disciplines. In 2021, a total of 7 majors have been selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction points. There are 2 post-doctoral mobile stations, 2 first-level doctoral programs, 4 first-level master’s programs, and 7 professional master’s programs.

The school always keeps in mind the principle of “developing talents, works, thoughts and patterns”. Adhering to the school motto of “Supreme Perfection and Beauty”, the school takes the cultivation of artistic talents who pursue both professional excellence and moral integrity featuring “excellent morality, solid foundation, professional excellence and strong practice” as its goal. Since its establishment, the school has trained nearly 10,000 art professionals and cultural management talents for China, among which quite a few have become influential celebrities and high-quality professionals in China and even the world

The Dance School has always combined teaching with artistic practice, constantly explored the professional layout and talent training mode, and formed a composite high-level dance talent training characteristic with comprehensive artistic accomplishment and international vision. The“Shanghai Youth Dance Troupe” affiliated to the school, as a dance teaching practice base, provides a broad platform for students. The Dance Research Institute has been established, and the only bilingual academic journal in China,Contemporary Dance Art Research, has integrated academic resources, improved the level of disciplines, and built an academic exchange platform for Chinese and foreign dance researchers.

In recent years, the college has successfully held many famous large-scale academic activities at home and abroad, which has improved the overall level of dance discipline construction; has undertaken the performance tasks of major events such as the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, the 2014 Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia. and the 45th World Vocational Skills Competition; has visited more than 60 countries and regions, contributing to the promotion of Chinese excellent culture to the world and the promotion of cross-cultural exchange of art.
