Beijing Dance Academy's 60th anniversary
Dance, one of the ancient art forms, has nearly 5000 years of history in China.
Dance in China is a highly varied art form, consisting of many modern and traditional dance genres.
China's top dance institution, the Beijing Dance Academy, is now celebrating its 60th anniversary.
China's most prestigious training academy of dance is opening up to the styles of the outside world.
The two-week-long celebrations have various segments, including international ballet competitions,
academic forums, workshops and dancing performances.
The academy's dean Guo Lei and the Party chief Wang Chuanliang said the academy will take this
opportunity to increase exchanges and cooperation with their counterparts worldwide.
Last Thursday, New Zealand's Unitec Institute of Technology and the Beijing Dance Academy inked
a new agreement to set up a joint undergraduate creative dance program as of 2015.
An international ballet competition was also held during the anniversary to promote worldwide
exchanges and development of ballet education and training.
Beijing Dance Academy, founded in 1954, is a respected world leader in dance education and has
helped trained many of China's leading dancers and teachers.
There is a long recorded history of various forms of dances in China. The dances cover a wide
range, from folk dances to performances in opera and ballet, and may be used in public celebrations,
rituals and ceremonies.
The teachers here seek to create innovative modern dance that blends foreign techniques with
Chinese content.
Known as China's "cradle of dancers", the Beijing Dance Academy has established a unique system
of dance education with Chinese characteristics, including academic subjects such as dance performances,
choreography, dance history and theory, art design, art management, new media, and somatic science of dance.
