Founded in 1959, Yunnan Arts University is one of the eight comprehensive higher art academies in China. It currently has 31 undergraduate majors, 5 disciplines authorized to offer master’s degree programs: Art Theory, Music and Dance, Drama and Film Studies, Fine Arts, and Design. It also has the right to confer MFA in 8 professional areas, including Music, Drama, Opera, Film, Radio and Television, Dance, Fine Arts, and Art Design.
In 2009, Yunnan Arts University was granted the right to confer doctor’s degrees and became a cultivation and construction unit in Yunnan Province. In 2019, it was approved as a provincial postdoctoral research workstation in art theory. It has 5 provincial key disciplines, 2 provincial characteristic & preponderant disciplines, 3 provincial A-level plateau disciplines, 8 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms such as Yunnan collaborative innovation center, key laboratory, engineering research center, base, and think tank, and 10 provincial teaching and research teams. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation held by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, it ranked among the top for many indicators in Fine Arts, Drama and Film Studies, Music and Dance, Design, and Art Theory.
Yunnan Arts University currently has 9 construction sites for national first-class undergraduate majors and 6 construction sites for provincial first-class undergraduate majors, accounting for 57.7% of the 26 enrollment majors. In the 2020 “Double Ten Thousand Plan” for national first-class undergraduate courses, 6 of its courses were recognized as national first-class ones and 10 of its courses were recognized as provincial first-class ones.
In the new era, Yunnan Arts University seizes great opportunities in the construction of “The Belt and Road” and “Double First-class” Initiatives. With virtue as its fundamental task, it adheres to the strategic positioning of “rooting in Yunnan, serving the whole country, radiating Southeast Asia, and opening to the world”, and is committed to building the university into a domestic first-class art university with international influence and distinctive characteristics.
The Dances College of Yunnan Arts University currently has three undergraduate majors: Dance Performance, Dancology (direction of dance education and ethnic dance inheritance), and Dance Choreography. It has two postgraduate training categories: academic category and professional category, including the three training directions of Chinese ethnic and folk-dance history and culture studies, Chinese ethnic and folk-dance education, and dance choreography. In the college, there are more than one thousand students. Adhering to the school-running concept of “focusing on the local, rooting in the ethnic groups, being eclectic and inclusive, inheriting and innovating”, it makes full use of regional advantages to deeply study the ethnic and folk traditional dances and to constantly deepen the reform of dance education and teaching in ethnic areas, thus accumulating a profound history for school running.
The dance college currently has 1 construction site for national characteristic majors and national first-class undergraduate majors. It offers 2 national first-class undergraduate courses and 1 national postgraduate demonstration course on ideological and political science. It has a strong teaching team with high-level teachers. It also has 1 construction site for provincial first-class undergraduate majors. It is entitled to the participation of the project to construct first-class disciplines and provincial characteristic & preponderant disciplines (groups) in “Music and Dance”. In addition, it has carried out more than 30 national and provincial scientific research and creative performance projects. Many of its original dance works have won gold, silver, and bronze awards in national and provincial competitions such as the National Dance Exhibition, the Chinese Dance “Lotus Award” Folk Dance Competition, the Art Performance Activities of National College Students, and Yunnan New Drama (Program) Show.Teachers and students of the college have been to the countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Singapore, and regions including Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Macao Special Administrative Region, and Taiwan Region for exchanges and performances, and made contributions to the promotion of cultural and artistic exchanges and development among regions.
