The dance group of the “China-CEEC Arts Cooperation Forum” held the second group discussions on the morning of May 10. More than 30 guests from different countries entered into in-depth discussions on the theme of “dance education”. Prof. Wang Wei participated in the discussions and delivered a keynote speech.

Prof. Wang Wei introduced that Beijing Dance Academy has held “Beijing International Ballet Invitational for Dance Schools” five times since 2006, and the sixth competition and performance events will be held in October. The competition is an international dance competition event organized by Beijing Dance Academy under the support of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government with the approval of the Ministry of Culture. It fosters international exchanges and cooperation through scholar’s forum, master workshop, performances, etc., and contributes to spreading Chinese culture, showcasing China’s achievements in dance education, and promoting cultural progress in Beijing. Wang Wei sincerely invites experts from the global dance community to meet at Beijing Dance Academy and share achievements in ballet education.

Wang Wei gave a wonderful keynote speech entitled “Dancing for the Future”. Starting with her visit to Romania for performance at the age of 18, she talked about the importance of cross-cultural exchanges for the development of dance art, and shared her unique insights into art education. Wang Wei pointed out that teaching knowledge and skills shall not be regarded as the main purpose of art education. It is necessary to attach importance to “cross-cultural education” and deem it as an essential ability. The comprehension of different cultures depends solely on “tolerance” and cultural identity. The second is knowledge cognition. It is necessary to learn about various cultures and values in the world. The third is ability, namely the ability to use language and tools. This content of education is neglected by us, causing an obstacle to our communication on modern education. She called for new philosophy of dance education and the establishment of an open and pluralistic education method. She said we should advocate the cultivation of aesthetic sentiments, artistic intelligence and creative thought; uphold the independent spirit and creativity ability as scholars and educators, and create a sense of awe for students; help dancers become modern people in the dance world while improving international education. Her views struck a chord with artists from all over the world.

Zhang Xu, Dean of School of Education of Beijing Dance Academy, served as the moderator of the group discussion. At the meeting, he introduced the current progress of popular dance education in China, which sparked heated discussions among the artists.  Ms.Miroslava Kovarova, the president of the Slovak Dance Festival, introduced the progress of dance education in Slovakia in the keynote speech. Dance experts from Chinese art schools and research institutions and artists from Central and Eastern European countries discussed and exchanged ideas on topics of interest to them.

Finally, Wang Wei pointed out that Dunhuang art is most fascinating for its inclusive, compatible, and generous attitude towards other cultures, as well as active absorption and integration. It has made possible positive exchanges for mankind and the spirit of co-creating civilization and the generous spirit of opening-up in China’s heyday period. In today’s era of globalization and co-building a new human civilization, we must leverage the art of dance and fulfil our responsibilities as artists and educators to create a better future for mankind!
